
POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS
Dental Extraction

Bleeding
-
Slight oozing for up to 24 hours is normal.
-
Bite gently on the gauze pad for 30–45 minutes after the extraction.
-
If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes.

Activity
-
Rest for the remainder of the day after surgery.
-
Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24-48 hours.
-
Keep your head elevated when lying down to reduce bleeding and swelling.

Swelling
-
Swelling is common, peaking 2–3 days after surgery.
-
Use an ice pack on the outside of the cheek for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours.
-
After 24 hours, warm compresses if needed.

Diet
-
Do not use a straw for the first few days to prevent dry socket.
-
Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods.
-
Stick to soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup) for the first 24–48 hours.

Pain & Discomfort
-
Mild to moderate pain is normal.
-
Take prescribed pain medication as directed.​
-
Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 48–72 hours.

Oral Hygiene
-
Rinse gently with warm salt water starting the day after surgery, 2–3 times daily.
-
Continue normal brushing and flossing for other teeth, but be gentle near the extraction site.
Caution: Your mouth may remain numb for a few hours after your appointment. Please avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off to prevent accidentally biting your cheek, tongue, or lip.
Please call us immediately if you notice severe or worsening pain, swelling that increases after 2-3 days, foul taste/odor from site and if a fever occurs.
