POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS

Sinus Lift Surgery

Initial First 24-48 Hours

Bleeding

  • Mild oozing is normal.

  • Bite gently on gauze for 30–60 minutes as needed.

  • Avoid frequent spitting or rinsing first 24 hours.

Swelling

  • Apply ice packs to the cheek (20 minutes on / 20 minutes off) for the first 24 hours.

  • Swelling usually peaks at 48–72 hours.

Pain & Discomfort

  • Start pain medication before numbness completely wears off.

  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed.

  • You may alternate ibuprofen and acetaminophen if approved by your provider.

Medications

  • Do not use over-the-counter nasal sprays unless approved.

  • Take prescribed antibiotics until finished.

  • If given a medicated mouth rinse (e.g., chlorhexidine), use as directed starting 24 hours after surgery.

Because the sinus membrane was lifted, pressure changes can disrupt healing

  • Blow your nose

  • Forcefully spit

  • Use straws

  • Smoke or vape

  • Sneeze with your mouth closed (sneeze with mouth open)

  • Perform heavy lifting or strenuous exercise

  • Fly or scuba dive (unless cleared)

  • Stay well hydrated.

  • Avoid hot, spicy, hard or crunchy foods.

  • Chew on the opposite side, if possible.

  • Soft, cool foods for the first few days.

Call Immediately

  • Persistent heavy bleeding

  • Increasing swelling after day 3

  • Fever over 101°F (38.3°C)

  • Severe pain not controlled by medication

  • Continuous clear fluid from nose

  • Graft material coming out in large amounts

  • Signs of sinus infection (foul smell, pressure, worsening congestion)

Oral Hygiene

  • Gentle saltwater rinses (after 24 hours) 2–3 times daily.

  • Do not brush the surgical area for several days.

  • Brush other areas normally.

Normal Signs

  • Mild bleeding or pink saliva

  • Swelling and bruising

  • Mild nasal congestion

  • Slight blood-tinged nasal drainage

  • Minor bone graft particles in the mouth (small grains)
